Have you ever completed an office fit out or refurbishment? What did you do with all the old furniture and chairs that you no longer needed? Did you throw them into the skip with all the other items you were getting rid of? Next time, you should consider either selling your old furniture and chairs or donating them to a relevant organization, such as the Salvation Army, because doing so is highly beneficial for the environment. When a company sells or donates their used furniture and chairs, they are actually reducing the amount of waste that is being dumped into landfill on a daily basis. As a lot of this furniture is made out of unnatural products, such as metal and plastic, they do not break down (or take years upon years to decompose), so will just sit in piles waiting to be covered over.
Quite often, the furniture and chairs that find their way into landfill aren’t damaged or broken in any way – they simply look outdated or no longer work with the colours or design of the workplace. Structurally, however, there is nothing wrong with these items of furniture. If this is the case, why not sell or donate them to someone who can still make use of them? There are plenty of businesses around these days that will buy used chairs and furniture for a number of reasons: perhaps they cannot afford brand new pieces, or perhaps they are going for a retro look for their workplace, or perhaps they plan to repurpose old furniture.
It is even possible to return furniture and chairs to some suppliers that will resell, refurbish or remanufacture it so that it is suitable for new buyers and businesses. If the supplier is reselling the chairs and furniture, it is simply sold as is. If the supplier is refurbishing furniture, they will repair any damage and make cosmetic improvements so that they are able to sell them for more. And, if the supplier is remanufacturing the chairs and furniture, the items have been taken apart, fixed up and put back together to appear much newer.
By selling or donating your old office furniture and chairs, you are helping to keep a lot of waste out of landfill. Not only does this benefit the environment by reducing the amount of rubbish we are producing, it lessens the need to extract natural resources from the earth (such as metals). So, next time your business receives some new furniture or chairs, don’t just throw the old ones out – do your bit for the environment.
